People should be aware that pre-tax payments to Flexible Spending Accounts, etc., lowers the amount of their pay that is subject to Social Security Tax, and therefore causes a lower Social Security contribution. That could mean a lower Social Security check, ultimately, especially for those who are in the years leading up to retirement.
Of course, if you’re lucky enough to earn more than the maximum amount taxed by Social Security, then pre-tax savings are a boon.
